chapter three

VOCABULARY

aloof - at a distance, esp. in feeling or interest; apart

impersonally - not personal; without reference or connection to a particular person

ornery - ugly and unpleasant in disposition or temper

resignedly - in a hopeless resigned manner

Today lulu and Bill went for a walk in the park. When Lulu made Bill feel aloof by talking to him about ducks, because Bill had a very bad accident with ducks as a child that was very ornery. Lulu felt horrible, to see the look on bills face after talking about the ducks. Bill told Lulu that it was impersonal, and about his accident as a child with ducks, in a resignedly way.

1. What does Cherry explain as the difference between the socs and the greasers?

Cherry explains that the difference between the socs and the greasers is, the greasers don't have much feelings about anything. While the socs have a lot of feeling for mostly everything.

2. What does Ponyboy mean on p. 39 when he says "Johnny and I understood each other without saying anything"? Have you ever had a relationship with someone who you understood, or who understood you, without having to say anything?

Ponyboy means when he said, "Johnny and I understand eachother without saying anything", that they both don't talk very much, but think a lot like each other, and have a lot of the same thoughts so they usually don't even have to talk because they think the same things half the time. Yes I've had a relationship with someone who understood me, it usually happens with people who your around a lot, and do the same things with you.

3. When and how did Pony's parents die?

Ponyboys parents died in a car accident, eight months before the night at the movies.

4. What happens when Pony comes home after his curfew?

When ponyboy comes home after his curfew Darry gets really really mad and screams at Pony, and eventually hit ponyboy, really hard.

5. Why does Johnny like it better when his father is hitting him?

Johnny likes it better when his father is hitting him, because then he feels that his father at least knows he is there.

6. At the end of the chapter, how does the author foreshadow that bad things are to come?

At the end of the chapter the author foreshadows that things are getting bad by saying, that ponyboy though things couldn't get any worse, but they did get much worse, and doesn't say anything about what happens and just ends the chapter.
