chapter one.

1. Describe each of the characters in this chapter and their relationship with one another.

Sodapop: Middle child, Blond hair, 16-17 Years old, Dumb, Hot.

Darry: (Darrel) oldest child, smart, loving, hansom, girlfriend: Sandy, 6 foot 2.

Ponyboy: Smart(nose in a book), 14 years old, Parents Died, youngest brother and in gang, light brown / reddish hair.

Johnny: (Johnny Cade)Got beet up, youngest next to Ponyboy, shy, parents were abusive.

Dally: (Dallas) likes to draw, hair is whitish blonde, eyes are cold: blue/grayish, elfy face, high cheek bones, painted nose, arrested at 10 years old, coller and leaner then the rest of the game.

Two-Bit-Mathews: (Keith Mathews) Part of gang, rusty colour side burns, oldest gang memeber, wise cracker, 6 foot tall, goes to school for the kiksSteve

Randle: Sodapops best friend, smart, cocky, tall, lean, thick hair.

2. Who are the Socs? Who are the Greasers?

Socs- richer than greasers, jump gresers, wreck houses, and throw beer blasts for fun, west-side rich kids, Public Disgrace.

Greaser's- East-Side, pooper than socs, like a hood, steal things, drive souped up cars, have gang fights once and awhile.

3. How do Ponyboy's relationships with Darry and Sodapop differ? Explain.

Ponyboy looks up to both of his brothers, however he loves Soda and fears Darry. Darry plays the role of the care giver at home so in my opinion I believe that Ponyboy thinks of him as somewhat of a parent. Where on the other hand Sodapop is closer in age and gentler with Ponyboy.

4. Why is the 'gang' important to Johnny?

The gang is especially important to Johnny because at home he gets abused by his parents and the gang is the only support he has. He is also the youngest of the bunch and the other members of the gang are people that he can look up to.

5. How does Ponyboy react to what Sodapop tells him about Darry?

After Sodapop told Ponyboy that Darry was proud of him & loved him and that when he hollers at him he doesn't mean anything by it, Pony reacts by saying sure without sarcasm.

6. Do you think Darry loves Ponyboy? Why does he treat Ponyboy the way he does?

Yes I believe that Darry loves Ponyboy. I think that Darry treats Pony the way he does because he acts like a father figure instead of a brother so he feels that he has more of a responsibility.

7. What does Ponyboy mean on page 18 when he says, "I lie to myself all the time"? Do you ever lie to yourself? Why?

When Pony said "I lie to myself all the time" he was trying to convince himself that he didn't care about Darry, when in reality he did. I think that one point or another everybody lies to themselves because they either are in denial, angry or upset.
