chapter ten

VOCABULARY

indignantly - angry, resentful, infuriated, mad

One day Lulu and Bill were walking down the street and say a very indignantly man, they asked the man what was wrong and he said he was thirsty and couldn't afford a drink.

1. How does Pony's dreaming, or lying to himself, finally work in this chapter?

Ponyboy dreams that Johnny isn't dead and keeps telling him self that. This works because it calms himself down, so he won't do something stupid.

2. Why was Johnny's dying so difficult for Dally to handle?

Johnny's dying was so difficult for dally to handle because, Johnny was the only one that he really liked, and now he has no one to live for and just wanted to die.

3. Why do you think Dally would have wanted to die?

I think Dally would have wanted to die because he was only staying alive for Johnny and now Johnny was dead so he thought their was no point to living.

chapter nine

1. On the bottom of p.133, when Pony asks what kind of a world it is, what comment is he making about how society judges people?

When Pony asks what kind of a world it is when he says that all he has to be proud of is his reputation and fact that he is a hood, He is making a comment on how there isn't much to be proud of if your a greaser where on the other hand Socs have is all.

2. Why do the boys fight? Why is Pony different?

The boys fight for different reasons, like just cause they enjoy it,to show off their muscles, to burn of steam, and just cause it feels good. Pony is different cause he doesn't like to fight, he thinks it is pointless, and people just always end up hurt anyways.

3. What is the difference between Tim Sheppard's gang and Ponyboy's? Explain how Pony feels this difference might give his group the upper hand?

The difference between Tim Sheppard's gang and Ponyboys gang is that Tim's gang has a leader and things were all organized but the Greasers were just buddies who stuck together and each man was his own leader. Pony feels that this gives the Greasers the upper hand because since they all are good friends they are always looking out for each other, but at the same time they don't need to follow leadership so they may work harder because they are using their own ideas.

4. What do you think Johnny's last words to Pony mean?

I think when johnny said to ponyboy "stay gold" it meant, don't change, your a great person, and to always try and do the best he can. Also that Johnny really cared about Pony.

chapter eight

1. How does what the doctor first says, on page 119, foreshadow Johnny's condition?

The doctors foreshadow that Johnny's condition by saying he can't see anyone, but he wants to see his friend, but hes in a lot of pain.

2. "We needed Johnny as much as he needed the gang. And for the same reason" (p.121). What do you think Pony means, and what is the reason?

I think pony boy means that Johnny means just as much to him as the gang does, and that's a lot, and if he dies then, the gang won't be like it was.

3. What does Pony mean on p. 123 when he says, "we could get along without anyone but Johnny"?

Ponyboy means when he says, "we could get along without anyone but Johnny" that if johnny dies it would be really different, but if someone else were to die , like Darry or Two-Bit , it would still pretty much me the same and they would still get along.

4. If Darry didn't have Soda and Pony, why would he be a soc?

If Darry didn't have Soda and Ponyboy he would be a soc because hes got everything he needs to be one, accept money, but if it weren't for them he would of stayed in school got a job and probally would of had money to be a soc.

5. What does Cherry mean when she says Bob "wasn't just anyone" on p.129?

Cherry means when she said, "Bob wasn't just anyone", that he wasn't like all the other guys, and you couldn't replace him.

chapter seven

1. Explain what Pony means when he says Soda "reminds me of a colt" on p. 101.

Pony boy means when he says Soda "reminds me of a colt", like a really pretty horse (colt), because of his good looks.

2. What condition is Johnny in after the fire?

Johnny was in critical condition after the fire. He had a broken back and had third-degree burns. Johnny could also not feel anything below his waste, and was gonna be crippled for the rest of his life.

3. Why would being crippled be worse for Johnny than someone else?

Being crippled would be worse for johnny then someone else, because he has no family that would help him take care of himself. If it was Ponyboy, Sodapop or Darry crippled then they would have each other to help take care.

4. "Maybe people are younger when they are asleep" (p.104). what do you think about this comment?

I think that this comment, is true , and its saying that when your asleep , your like a little kid, you don't really worry and you dream about things that you would never think of as a teenager or adult, and that a kid would.

5. What is a juvenile delinquent (p. 107)? Find a definition on the Internet, in a dictionary, or create your own based on your own knowledge.

The definition of a juvenile delinquent is: a minor who cannot be controlled by parental authority and commits antisocial or criminal acts, as vandalism or violence.


6. Why would Two-Bit think Johnny, Dally, and Pony were heroes all along; before they saved the kids?

Two-bit would think that Johnny, Dally, and ponyboy were heroes all along because they're always there for each other, and are always sticking up and helping their friends, and each other.

7. What was Bob's 'real' problem, according to Randy (p.116)?

Bob's 'real' problem according to Randy is, Bob's parents spoiled him so much, and no one ever told him "no".

8. Why did Pony think it was better to see socs as "just guys" on p. 118? What do you think he means by this?

I think pony boy thought it was better to see socs as "just guys", because they were and they were just like any other guy. I think he meant that even though they're socs, not greasers they're still regular guys, not just rich people, that jumped kids.

chapter six

VOCABULARY

bewildered- completely puzzled or confused; perplexed.

Bill and Lulu got into a huge fight, but Lulu didn't understand what Bill was trying to say, she was very bewildered.

1. Do you think Dally's parents have influenced the way he is; his personality? Explain.

Yes i think Dally's parents have influenced the way he is, because they were never there for him, so he had to pretty much raise himself, so that made him very tough and ruff, cause their was never really anything to get sensitive over. Also he got into a lot of trouble, because his parents didn't care and didn't discipline him so he never learned.

2. Why doesn't Dally want Johnny to turn himself in?

Dally doesn't want Johnny to turn himself in, because he thought since he was a greaser he would of gotten a much worse punishment. Also if he was going to turn himself in he should of done it the day after bill was killed.

3. What "other side" of Dallas is revealed in this chapter?

The "other side" of Dally that was revealed in this chapter, was a sensitive side that showed he did care about things.

4. What's your own definition of a hero? Do the three boys prove themselves to be heroes, according to your definition? Explain.

I think a hero is someone who is always there for people, not matter who they are. No, these boys don't fit my definition of a hero, because they jump people, and aren't always honest, and only stick up for each other, and don't really care about other people that much.

5. Why do you think Johnny wasn't scared, despite the obvious danger, on page 92?

I don't think johnny was scared , because he was just worry about saving the kids, and it was all happening to quickly that there wasn't really time to be scared.

chapter five

VOCABULARY

reluctantly - struggling in opposition

sullen - showing irritation or ill humor by a gloomy silence or reserve

eluded - to avoid or escape by speed

imploringly - to beg urgently

gallant - brave, spirited, noble

indignant- expressing strong displeasure

Today Bill and Lulu went to the carnival, and took the long way and eluded traffic. While taking the long way their was a very sullen moment, and awkward silence. Bill and Lulu thought they were taking the better way but they hit a train. The train didn't stop Lulu though, she was very gallant and jumped out of the car and over the train to get in line for the carnival. After about fifteen minutes bill was very reluctantly about even going to the carnival after his wait, and went to lulu in a very indignant way, because he had to sit in the car for so long.Lulu imploringly asked bill to please go to the carnival. After another few minutes bill agreed to go in the carnival, and they had a great time.


1. Why does Pony have a problem with Johnny's idea to disguise themselves?

Ponyboy didnt want to use Johnny's idea with disguising themselves because he didnt want to cut and bleach his hair, because that was their way of looking like a greaser and if he did that to his hair then he wouldnt look like a greaser anymore.

2. What does Pony mean when he says, "I was supposed to be the deep one" (p. 75)?

Pony means when he says, "I was supposed to be the deep one" because he was always thought good, and deep into poems and books and stuff, and when he was telling johnny about the poem he read before, Johnny said something really deep about the poem, that Ponyboy would of never thought of.

3. Why does Johnny think he is a hero (p. 76)? Do you think Dally is a hero based on what he did?

What Dally did was really nice but i wouldnt say he was a hero, he just helping out his friend so he wouldn't get in trouble, but he never really did anything else before that, and he gets in touble offten, and he likes to the police saying that Johnny and Pony went to texas.

4. Why does Pony realize he doesn't like Dally? Can you explain what he means by this?

Pony relizes he doesn't like Dally because, hes not like anyone else and hes to human, and real, unlife the rest of the greasers. Also Dally was really tough and scared Pony. Pony and Darry also just have nothing in common.


5. Examine Robert Frost's poem, Nothing Gold can Stay. What do you think the poem is saying? How might this apply to the characters in the novel?

I think that the poem Nothing Gold can Stay is saying that nothing great lasts forever, everything has a beginning and eventually comes to an end. Just like the flower in the poem it is grow, looks beautiful, and eventually dies.

6. On page 78, Johnny compares Pony and his brothers to their parents. Which one of your parents are you most like? What similarities do you share?

I look like my mother, and i think somtimes i can act like my mom and sometimes like my dad it depends on the mood i am in.

7. What does Pony mean when he says he drinks Pepsi's like a friend (p.78)?

Pony ment when he said he drinks pepsi's like a friend, meaning he drinks them alot, and doesn't like to stop drinking them.

8. What's a 'heater'? Why does Dally have one?

A 'Heater' is a gun. Dally has a heater because he just wants to scare the socs, its not really loaded or anything, it just looks tough, and keeps people away.

9. Why are the socs and the greasers going to fight in the vacant lot?

The socs and greasers are going to fight in the vacant lot, because they are all really upset about one of the socs being killed and it's like pay back to the greasers.

10. Who's the spy for the greasers? Does this surprise you? Why or why not?

Cherry Valence is the spy for the greasers. Yes, this does surpise me because she's a socs and shes helping the greasers.

chapter four

VOCABULARY

ruefully- causing sorrow or pity

hermit- a person who has withdrawn from society and lives a solitary existence; a recluse

premonition- a feeling of anticipation of or anxiety over a future event; presentiment

This week bill and lulu decided to go on a little trip to the beach, but it made them ruefully. It made them ruefully because they heard that their friends were gonna be hermits. They didn't know what to do, they were so upset for half the week. Until Bob as smart as he is remembered that they had an extra room in their house and space for them to stay. Lulu called their friends and they took their offer right away. All them felt so premonition over the idea, and the end of their vacation was great.

1. What does Pony mean when he says the socs were "reeling pickled" on page 54?

Ponyboy meant when he said the socs were "reeling pickled" that they were really angry and upset with him and Johnny.

2. What major event happens in this chapter?

The two major events that happened in this chapter were..

1. The socs came after to beet up and try and kill ponyboy, and johnny saves ponyboy from being drown by one of the socs by killing Bill, one of the socs.

2. Pony and Johnny knew that Johnny was going to get caught by the police and put onto the electric chair, so they got a gun and money from dally and hopped on a train and ran away to Windrixville, 45 minutes away to live in an abandon church.

3. How did the author foreshadow that Johnny would use his knife in Chapter 2?

The author foreshadow that Johnny would use his knife in chapter two by saying "He now carries in his back pocket six-inch switchblade. He'd use it too, if he ever got jumped again."

4. What would your advice be to Johnny and Ponyboy if they'd come to you for help instead of Dally? Explain.

I would probably of done the same as Dally, because i would know that if i didn't johnny would just be killed by the police and it was the best thing for them, at least for the moment.
